Great Story! I must say, however, that, overall, Sam Walker’s book depicting the first two decades of the ACC is right on target. In fact, his book comes about as close as anything ever chronicled to being an encyclopedia of that era. I don’t for a moment think Lefty ever would spit on Dean’s hand, but I do think he would offer a vehement epithet explaining his displeasure with Dean ultimately winning the Charlie Scott recruiting battle. The true irony of the Charlie Scott story is that this was the first really major recruiting story in the ACC, because of the racial overtones, yet it involved Davidson, not another ACC school. You Wildcats have a way of doing that sort of thing, don’t you”

I wouldn’t celebrate their copying Raleigh police’s way of dealing with the press. RPD routinely tells TV crews and news reporters to stand blocks away, often out of sight from the situation, even when there is no danger in coming closer. They have done so while allowing other members of the public to pass through the area, in effect, restricting members of the press to a greater amount than the citizens around them. RPD has an excellent and helpful spokesperson who clearly understands the rights of freedom of information, but many of their line officers often don’t seem to respect the basic law allowing public access to know what’s happening.

What are the connections. occupations and interests of Donna Bell, Matt Czajkowski, and Gene Pease? Their names are broad spectrum but I guess their affiliations are with the minority.

Seems like swat teams in riot gear is the response to anything these days. Couldn’t find a back story in this paper about this building’s “occupation” and subsequent police action, just the one about the reporter. Who were the dangerous banditos inside the building, 10 college students, a couple nuns and some senior citizens and anti-war vets?
Whatever happened to the neighborhood cops on the beat who could solve a minor problem just through their own dialog and the citizens respect for their fairness? Were they wiped out by swat teams?
No apology from police either, because the law too often respected is might makes right.
Occupy is generally a peaceful trouble free group. I’ve been at marches and rallies where hundreds were managed by two or three cops who helped direct traffic flow when crossing streets. Everyone got along fine,no problems whatsoever.
Putting in excessive police presence is just a measure by the corrupt, or their lackeys, to generate tension about the group, and of course, to then whine about how much it cost a municipality.
God Bless America, Devil take the Plutocrats who have destroyed it.

As a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill with a degree in journalism, I think the chief of police and all three members of the town council who voted against the apology to the N&O are dead wrong. There is a remedy, however, and that is for these four, plus all members of the police department, especially the “SWAT” team, to be made to take a course in Journalism 101 and First Amendment Rights. Then perhaps they wouldn’t be so ignorant of the law and proper handling of the press. Proper reporting isn’t the same as PR, which is the mistake that people uneducated in the workings of the American press always make. Public Relations professionals always strive to present the best possible light on their “clients,” whereas professional journalists strive to present both sides, the good and the bad. This often causes journalists to be where public officials would prefer they not be and asking questions that wrongdoers, ignoramuses and screwups prefer they not ask. Thank goodness the majority of the Chapel Hill Town Council doesn’t fall into any of those categories. BTW, do the town council members still sit with the conservatives on the right and the liberals on the left? And do they still have a love-hate relationship with the university? I always thought that was so quaint.

I’m actually not sure if that would legally justify detaining a working member of the press, but I do know that according to the initial N&O piece from November, the reporter in question was outside of the business when detained, presumably on the sidewalk — the public right-of-way. IANAL, but I don’t believe standing on the sidewalk, observing, qualifies as “trespassing.” Correct me if I’m wrong.

Getting rid of TSA in a great idea and I hope Ron Paul gets it done !
However , I don’t see much improvement in doing so since he wants to replace TSA with other cretins from civilian companies to perform the full body search .
I, for one will NEVER take a flight again and subject myself to this kind of abuse ! It is humiliating, degrading and offensive !

In a statement issued to the press, Rand Paul’s father Congressman Ron Paul, said that if he were elected President, he would eliminate the TSA entirely.

“The police state in this country is growing out of control,” said Paul in a statement. ”One of the ultimate embodiments of this is the TSA that gropes and grabs our children, our seniors, and our loved ones and neighbors with disabilities. The TSA does all of this while doing nothing to keep us safe.”

Well, let’s think this through, geniuses. We start making exceptions: no screening of children, seniors, loved ones and those with disabilities. Guess what happens?

Recall that many suicide bombers in Israel were young women aged 10-13.

The comment by Paul is idiotic and DANGEROUS. And the idea that a “pat down” = “bullying” is equally absurd. GET A LIFE. There is no TYRANNY here. There is no CONSPIRACY. To say so is just PARANOID. If you want to really look at erosion of personal liberties, why didn’t you challenge phone tapping under Bush??

Yes, the TSA is inconvenient. Yes, the 10 minutes even 20 minutes you spend there can be inconvenient, occasionally humiliating. No one should deny that DIGNITY should be maintained.

Do NOT make the CURE worse than the disease. INVESTIGATE reported abuses by TSA workers and work to change their practices WITHOUT COMPROMISING OUR SECURITY IN THE AIR!!

Because Congress in its infinite wisdom even deigns to arrest American citizens on their own property should someone denounce them as terrorists, Congress thinks the TSA can do anything it wants. NONE of the “high profile seizures” had anything whatever to do with terrorism. And the soldier had two items confiscated. On his first trip through TSA “security” the screeners found a smoke grenade and missed the FIVE POUNDS of C4. Again, this person is not a terrorist. RE the broader issue, TSA “security” is a pointless charade. While they are harassing a well-known politician, catering/cleaning personnel have unrestricted access to the aircraft, the full body scanners are easy to defeat by anyone who understands how they work, and the checkpoint itself is a target rich environment for a bomber or shooter. Real security experts such as Federal Air Marshals and Red Team leaders privately refer to the agency as the Terrorist Support Agency, because they divert massive resources away from productive activity such as intelligence and law enforcement work.

It seems to me the real problem with Edwards is there is very little there there. Dude has under his belt one six year Senate term, two Presidential runs in which he performed at best so so, and no other elected experience. If Gingrich tries to pull a comeback, he’s got some substance to balance out his complete unsuitability as a leader and sex scandals– he was in Congress for twenty years, he was Speaker of the House, he singlehandedly organized a whole party, he gripped the national dialogue for years. There is some reason one can identify why we might pay attention to Gingrich. What does Edwards have to offer to make us want to overlook his downsides? The people who like him seem mostly to do so because he hired Joe Trippi and had some really nice messaging for a brief period in 2006-2008. That doesn’t seem very substantial or unique. Are we really so hard up for strong progressives that in 2016 or 2020 we will have no one else to carry a flag except a guy who hasn’t worked in government for 12 years and is remembered mostly for a really ugly sex scandal?

Newt Gingrich shoved divorce papers at his first two wives when they were sick in bed, and supposedly asked his second wife to allow him to maintain an open relationship with her. It is also said that Newt convinced his daughters from his first marriage to said bad things about the second wife. I feel that Newt is much less of a family man, and has very little of the family values he claims to have. I have heard that John Edwards didn’t admit the paternity at first, because Rielle was seeing another man immediately after their affair was over, so it was iffy at first. I do not commend him for getting Andrew Young to take the blame, that was dumb. But if the Republicans can easily forgive Newt for his behavior, just because of his political stances, why can’t the rest of us do the same for John? I guess we all placed him on the Kennedy pedestal, and tore him off when his lovechild appeared.

I am living in distant Goa, India, but I had watched John Edwards waking up at odd hours of the nights debating on TV, feeling he could well be the dark horse in the last Presidential race. He had all the makings of a substitute to Obama, his charisma reminding me of the Kennedy days. In fact, I likened him to late Robert Kennedy.

The rest is history, and that keeps me saddened.
