RALEIGH – The Raleigh Police Department is looking for a group of men that they say savagely beat and attacked a downtown Raleigh restaurant worker who was trying to keep them from stealing money from a woman’s purse.
According to police, the group of assailants were well-dressed men who were captured on video surveillance after the event. According to video stills released by the police, at least one of the men was wearing a suit.
“The five suspects are white males, each of whom was described as neatly dressed in a ‘preppy’ fashion,” said Sughrue in a statement about the incident.
Police say that the incident took place at the La Volta Restaurant on Fayetteville Street, which is located near the City Plaza and the downtown Marriott Hotel. It has been speculated that the men may have been guests at a nearby hotel. The assault took place at around 3am on November 24th.
Raleigh Police spokesman Jim Sughrue said that the men appeared to be intoxicated and had stirred up trouble outside of the restaurant in the area where there is outdoor seating. When one of the men tried to steal money out of a woman’s purse at the scene, a male restaurant worker tried to intervene, said Sughrue. The group of men then started savagely beating and kicking the victim before leaving the scene, said police.
“The victim was hit and kicked by the suspects, who then walked away heading south on Fayetteville Street,” said Sughrue in a statement to the press.
According to Sughrue, the restaurant worker had to undergo medical treatment and is still suffering some medical issues from the beating by the suspects.
Sughrue said they are still looking for the men in the case and released photographs of the men in an effort to locate the assault and larceny suspects.
One of the men seen in the video is wearing a dark blue or black suit with a yellow tie. Another man is wearing a yellow dress shirt while the other suspects are wearing khaki pants or dress pants. The man in the yellow shirt is being seen to be pulled by members of his group from the scene as they flee. One of the men appears to also have a beard.
