FAYETTEVILLE - According to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department, detectives arrested and charged a Fort Bragg US Army soldier with breaking in to a local gun store and allegedly stealing $68,000 worth of guns early this morning, Monday May 7th.
Arrested in the case was William David Devane, age 28, of Fort Bragg. Police say that he allegedly broke out a glass front door of Gun Plus at 1503 North Bragg Boulevard in Spring Lake and “forced open a metal roll-up door” to gain entry into the building.
“Once inside the business, Devane took nine semi-automatic rifles, seven semi-automatic handguns, ammunition, gun sights and several weapon magazines,” said Debbie Smith of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. “The property was valued at more than 68 thousand dollars.”
The police say that Devane didn’t make it far as he was captured shortly after leaving the gun store.
“He was found next door to the business he’d robbed, hiding on top of a panel type vehicle,” said Smith in a statement to the media.
The police said that Devane was given a $50,000 bond and is expected to make a first court appearance on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. in the Detention Center Courtroom. ::
